DP UNDER 15 YEARS OF MAO- HAS IT GAINED STRENGTH OR WEAKENED.

There is tension growing in the party DP (Democratic Party) as the elections for new party leaders get closer. the current party president who doubles as a minister of justice and constitutional affairs in Museveni’s government Nobert Mao is seeking for the fourth term.  He has been yin charge of the party for the past 15 years.

whether he keeps his position or replaced, will be decided during the party's national delegates conference which is taking place in Mbarara city from today Friday.

However, his seek for another term has developed mixed feelings with in the party, some members say that he has weakened the 70-year party and should give way for new leadership. Others however say that Mao has represented them well and deserve to stay. Those planning to challenge Mao for the top seat include, Bukoto central MP Richard Ssebamala, Buikwe South MP Michael Lulume Bayiga and DP vice president for northern Uganda Mr. Alia Alitia.

WITH HOPES.

Mao became the president of DP in 2010 after defeating the late Ntege Ssebaggala in a hotly contested delegates conference which was held in Mbale, Mao was the first non muganda to lead the party. Many saw the election as the fresh start for DP which had been struggling with the rise of FDC  his leadership started well with the number of MPs increasing from 8 in 2006 to 11 in 2011 and then to 15 in 2016 polls. This gave party the hopes that the party could again be strong like in the 1980s and 90s when it had strong support across the country.

INSIDE CONFLICTS.

Before the pols of 2016, divisions started to grow within the party while the official position of the party was to support the former prime minister Amama Mbabazi for the president, some party leaders -led by Kampala lord mayor Elias lukwago defied this and instead supported the FDC Dr Kiiza Besigye.

Lukwago eventually crossed to FDC the disagreements worsened when Mao’s leadership rejected the mobilization activities organized by the party regional leader mostly from Buganda. things feel apart in 2020 when a group of members including 11 DP members of parliament crossed to national unity platform (NUP). This marked the biggest setback in the party under Mao’s leadership.

In the 2021 elections , DP managed to get only nine parliamentary seats but the number has also dropped as three of MPs crossed to NUP, these includes Paul Lutamaguzi (nakaseke south) saying that the party has lost direction meaning the party is left with only six MPs in the parliament  DPs shrinking influence became more visible during the 2021 elections when the vice president for the party, mr Mukasa mbidde ran for MP in nyendo mukungwe and lost. Many party members had openly former NUP presidential candidate Robert kyagulanyi than their party candidate Nobert Mao.

Mr. Mao’s critics also accuse him for weakening the party youth wing, the Uganda young democrats (UYD), which used to attract young people and train new leaders.

Another biggest mistakes Mao’s critics accuse him is signing cooperation agreement with the ruling party national resistance movement (NRM ) in 2022 some party members believe that the deal was more of  his personal gains than the good of the party .
